Racecourse picnics

A survey on the original site found that some courses will welcome a cucumber sandwich and some will turn you around at the gate. Rules change, so treat this as history plus a prompt to check before you pack the hamper.

• Pontefract — most enclosures except Premier; limited alcohol. Best of the original list.
• Newcastle — Grandstand and Paddock picnic area; no glass, no alcohol.
• Salisbury — by the car or on a blanket in Tattersalls / Course; alcohol often banned.
• Doncaster, Brighton, Redcar, Beverley, Bath — designated spots only, not the grandstand restaurants.
• Chepstow — family days, not a free-for-all.
• Leicester, Southwell — own food was unwelcome in the stands; Leicester pointed people at the picnic car park.
