Going updates
On British turf the going is one of the first facts you need. The usual scale is Hard, Firm, Good to Firm, Good, Good to Soft, Soft, Heavy. Good is the target. Clerks water in a dry spell and hope the drains work after rain.
Some horses want it fast, some want it deep. A “good ground” animal can look ordinary on soft, and the other way round.
